Haitian Health Foundation
A volunteer effort of health professionals begun in 1982 has grown into an outpatient health care facility supported by a nondenominational foundation called the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF). Dr. Jerry Lowney, a Connecticut
orthodontist, created the HHF after four years of providing dental extractions in makeshift clinics in Port-au-Prince. At the suggestion of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Dr. Lowney continued his selfless work and opened a health care facility in rural Jeremie for "the poorest of the poor." In 1997 Dr. Edward Ferry saw Dr. Jerry Lowney, and once again Jerry spoke of the need in Haiti. In 1999, Dr. Ferry and Dr. Mike spent a week in Jeremie extracting decayed teeth and treating infection. Since then, the doctors have made several "pilgrimages" with Dr. Lowney.
